Q: What type of protection does my mail account have? Can you help me receive less spam?
A. Our mail servers use several different technologies to protect your inbox from spam and viruses. This protection is done automatically for all accounts; you do not need to do anything to use them, they are already working for you. We utilize Clam AntiVirus to remove messages with known viruses and fraudulent phishing attacks. Our virus definitions are automatically updated twice daily to ensure you are protected from the latest viruses before they are wide spread. We additionally employ SpamAssassin to filter out junk email, which is one of the most mature and reliable technologies for this purpose. SpamAssassin subjects every email we receive to hundreds of different tests; this includes checking the sender and any web links against several online spam databases, text analysis or the message, common spammer errors in the messasge construction, and much more. If the message tests positive for enough tests, the email is rejected.
Despite our best efforts, some spam will still make its way to you. It is impossible, with available technology, to make an infallible mail filter. Given this, the first part of your strategy should be to keep your email address out of the spammers hands to begin with. If you do not trust a website, do not provide them with your real email address. Be cautious of checkboxes on website forms which might voluntarily elect you into receiving promotional messages. Do not post your email address on public bulletin boards, news groups or websites. The second part of your strategy should be to use your mail program's own spam filtering abilities. Most major mail programs, including Outlook 2007, Apple Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird, include some form of built-in, self-learning spam filter that you can train to identify and eliminate the rest of the spam that makes its way to you.
If you are interested in helping global efforts against the spam problem, you may do so by reporting spam you receive. Taking part in this process can be technical, and is recommended for advanced users. We recommend reporting spam to the Federal Trade Comission and Spamcop.
Q: How do I get people to find my site?
A. The most important thing that you can do is to let your current clients know that you have a website. Add your website's address to all of your stationery. Place ads in The Yellow Pages with your website's address. Print your website's address on some postcards. Send letters to your referring clients about the site, and send them some of those postcards to give to your prospective clients.
Q: What about search engines?
A. When we create your website, we add keywords and meta tags to make it easier to find. New websites, however, sometimes have to wait three to six months before they appear in the index of a search engine. There is no way to ensure high placement in a search engine without paying for a "sponsored link" or banner ad. We can help you advertise with search engines like Google and Yahoo! if you wish to do so.
Q: How do I monitor the success of my web site?
A: We provide a site statistics program which graphically interprets the number of visitors that come to your website. This program collects information about traffic to your website, including which pages people are viewing, how long they are staying on your site, and the number of repeat visitors.
Q: Can I have a counter?
A: The website statistics program provides all of the functionality of a counter, and much more.
