Geek Pride!

May 25th is Geek Pride Day, so to honor this momentous global celebration, the Mudbug Media team thought we’d let our Geek Flag fly and share some of the things that cause us to regularly geek out.

I think it should come as a surprise to exactly no one that most of our graphic designers, programmers and Google specialists can proudly flaunt a ton of geek cred.  We have five iPads.  That means we’re not only early adopters, we also won’t be satisfied with just one example of the latest and greatest in internet technology.  We have to have five.

In the Cloud

Cloud computing is nothing new.  The concept of relying on a grid or network of online resources for computing needs has been around for decades without becoming mainstream because clouds are expensive to build and maintain.

The cloud movement gained serious traction this week as Netflix announced it will move most of its online resources to Amazon’s Simple Storage Service, or S3.

In Netflix’s case, user queues and a massive movie library will be moved over to Amazon’s servers for storage.  When you download a movie from Netflix, you will actually be receiving the information from an Amazon S3 server.

Before the Internet, businesses could keep track of customers very easily; they would walk in the front door and shake the owner’s hand.  But in the modern online marketplace it’s a virtual impossibility to tell who visited your site, how and why they got there and which products or services attracted their interest without some sort of tracking system.

That’s where analytics come in.  Functioning like an online inventory system, analytics programs allow to you gather a wide range of information on every visitor to your site.  And since the majority of analytics programs are free and open to the public, there’s no reason why every website today shouldn’t employ some sort of analytical tracking method.

Flashdance

With the launch of the iPad, Steve Jobs fired a shot at Adobe’s widely used Flash platform, calling the company “lazy” for not committing to stronger Flash updates as the 14 year old system ages.

Over the weekend, Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch finally responded, committing to improve performance, while Flash engineer Tinic Uro blogged about the improved performance of an upcoming version of Flash that addresses some of the myriad problems and drawbacks that inspired the “lazy” comment.

I think Jobs’s persistent trashing of Flash and refusal to allow it anywhere near Apple mobile products has finally hit home, but I don’t think there’s much Adobe can do about it.
