Chrome OS: It’s Kind of a Big Deal

A few weeks ago, Google announced that they would be entering the operating system market. While this wasn’t really a huge surprise to most people in the industry, it did come with a bit of a bombshell: Google Chrome OS will be the first “cloud operating system”. At this point, you may be wondering what on (Google) Earth does that mean? In a cloud computing environment, your applications and service are located in “the cloud” (i.e. The Internets) instead of being installed locally on your own machine. You probably use cloud applications every day. Some notable examples are Facebook, Gmail, and Flickr. There are many benefits to an operating system that fully harnesses the power of the cloud, which is exactly what Google sets out to do with Chrome OS.

Design Challenges

Science and Engineering and Branding! Oh My!

I recently had the privilege of designing for Tulane University’s School of Science and Engineering (SSE). Every design project brings new and interesting challenges. Here are a few I faced:

  1. Create a new branding for a subject (science and engineering) that I knew little about.
  2. Administer the new branding across a website, handouts, brochures and other print materials.
  3. Design within Tulane University’s standards and guidelines while effectively creating a new look for SSE.

So now instead of sending tweets to your followers, ‘chirps’ go to those people who have paid to subscribe to you. Yes, you read correctly. Super Chirp allows you to use an existing Twitter account to communicate with people who have paid to read your 140 character messages.
